Imagine with me for a second; You walk into a restaurant and are immediately hit with what can only described as an olfactory orgasm. You can smell the in house hot chicken, fresh and still sizzling. The ambiance hits you next. Relaxed with a happy go lucky inclusive hot spot vibe that makes you not only hungry, but comfortable. Next is the happy faces. Not just plastered on smiles like you see in the usual chains (Ahem. I am looking at you...place that rhymes with smurches, or Lopeyes). Employees that are actually happy to be at work. A group of people that have become family, and employees that are truly cared for by management. Now I know this isn't the usual food review, but for a place that stands out like this, I need to be thorough.
Northern Chicken shines on 124th street in our #YEG as one of the best local eateries to hit up for good food, good beer and good spirits. This year has been a mess for many of us, but when you get some good chicken, your problems disappear. Even if just for a moment in time. But its a much needed staycation for you, and your tastebuds. Their logo is basically the foreplay. Cocky (Ha!), with an aesthetic that we all love. Plain brown paper bags are the way to my heart.
Now lets get to the food. The chicken is sublime. Coming in several different flavors, It always has the right amount of crunch while being so succulent that you may need a napkin, or six. The hot chicken is one of their best sellers, and with good reason. The spice hits just right, with the perfect amount of flavor. The only issue I had with the hot chicken is that I did not order more. The spice level was great. Hot but not overly spicy. It basically tickled my taste buds and made me crave their side of coleslaw or mac n cheese.
Just don't order it if you think mayo is spicy.
The macaroni and cheese is not your typical blah side dish. This is what angel tears would taste like. The macaroni isn't over cooked, and the cheese sauce stands out with a perfect zest. The Doritos on top are the cherry on the sundae and complete this beautiful dish. It has the crunch, the smooth creamy cheese, and carbs. Its like prince charming of macaroni. He rode in to save your taste buds after eating some of that spicy chicken. That's my kind of #romance
The broccoli was a surprise in the best way. I didn't think I could ever love a veggie as much as I did. The salty bacon paired with the peanuts had my mouth watering constantly. It was a full on surprise when I finished the whole side without sharing. I am not sure how they did it, but I am a big fan and I would stand in line for that broccolis autograph. Even my kids loved it. Just...promise me you'll try it. And then you can feel good about eating healthy...while enjoying fried chicken. #winning
Now my favorite. A sloppy mustard chicken sandwich. I told them when I ordered that if I was able to walk after eating this sandwich, then it was not sloppy enough. Sure enough they came though and I needed a nap and a cigarette afterwards (and I don't even smoke). Beans, a sloppy cheese sauce, and mustard chicken. Its enough to make you groan in delight. I cannot stress enough how this sandwich could turn a saint into a sinner. Don't like mustard? You do now! It has such a complimentary bundle between two pieces of Texas toast that the mustard becomes an indescribable partner in the messiest crime of passion between your mouth and that sandwich.
Overall, I am always so impressed with Northern Chicken, the staff, the welcoming inclusive environment and their hospitality.
